Did you know that the Sail Able Association of Nova Scotia is a registered, non-profit, organization located right here in the Halifax area? Our aim is to promote the integration of persons with disabilities into the recreation of sailing for pleasure and/or competitive sailing.
Sail Able has no paid employees and is operated entirely by its members and volunteers who help raise the funds necessary to keep the program afloat. The annual membership fee of only $25.00 per year allows each member to sail on our sailboat often from the middle of June until the end of September each summer.
Our accessible 20.6 foot sailboat, appropriately named Free Spirit, is kept at an accessible dock on an accessible marina at the Dartmouth Yacht Club on Windmill Road, Dartmouth. We are always happy to discuss our program, and we would be proud to give you a tour of, or a sail on, our accessible sailboat.
This year, Sail Able intends to offer qualified sail instruction throughout the summer. With our two Martin 16’s acquired as a result of a very successful Mobility Cup 2007, we can offer our members the opportunity to learn to sail. Sip and puff technology is now onboard and ready for high quads or others that have difficulty grasping objects with their hands. W also have a Spectrum lift to assist with getting on and off the boat. There is nothing to stop you from getting out on the water, sailing on your own.
Volunteers are essential for Sail Able and are needed to assist in many capacities. If you have time to spend with us, even if it is an hour here or a morning or afternoon there, please let us know. Also, any donations of funds, or items that can be used on our boat, are always welcome and are acknowledged by official receipts for tax purposes. This program has improved the quality of life for many since 1990. With the support of more members and volunteers, we will continue to do so for many years to come. So come out and enjoy some fun in the sun with us
